Though shes the scion of British folks first-class honours degree family (girl of Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson), Carthy upholds tradition in a way that should attract a broader and younger consultation. Her herculean, slightly husky alto immediately puts you in mind of British trad number one ladies Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior and Linda Thompson. But, like June Tabor, Carthy is cheeky and takes risks, working elements of mariachi, ska and tango into this well-written, sharply played, crisply produced CD. And while the Weimar seasoning of some tunes is a bromide by now, nothing else rings false. Download: Follow the Dollar.
