Ramsay dismisses swearing row in Australia

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Volatile British master chef Gordon Ramsay on Friday played down controversy in Australia over his foul language on television, saying he had no intention of changing his outspoken style.

The Australian Senate or upper house, which carried out an inquiry into Ramsay's swearing, urged television networks on Thursday to upgrade the way they warn viewers of coarse material and deal with viewers' complaints.

But Ramsay, in Australia for a series of cooking shows in Sydney, was unapologetic. He said his television programs, which are ratings winners in Australia, show the real pressures of working in a restaurant kitchen.

"I want to run a proper kitchen with a pair of bollocks, not stand there and wish everybody a merry Christmas and pat them on the back every time they do a good job," Ramsay told the Nine Network on Friday.

"It's high pressure, high energy and more importantly, real. That's how we keep it each and every day."

Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and Hell's Kitchen programs, broadcast on Nine, are among the most popular shows on Australian television.

The Senate inquiry was prompted by one episode aired earlier this year in which Ramsay used a four-letter expletive more than 80 times in 40 minutes.

Ramsay appeared at a function for the Sydney Food and Wine show later on Friday, where he light-heartedly chided the Nine Network.

"I'd like to give channel Nine a big telling off for making my name bad in Australia. Has no one got an edit suite and not broadcasting those naughty words before nine o'clock? I'm getting the flak for it everywhere I go".

David Bowie film set for musical

David Bowie has reportedly given the go-ahead for a musical based around his hits.

Director Peter Schaufuss is believed to have been given the singer's backing for a version of Bowie's cult sci-fi film 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'.

The production will weave the singers hits based around the storyline of the 1976 flick.

Schaufuss plans to launch the musical in his native Denmark this autumn, reports The Sun.

Abba's 'Mamma Mia', Madness' 'Our House' and Queen's 'We Will Rock You' have already proven to be big hits in London's West End.

Director Egoyan challenges web "cliche"

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Who said the Web was worldwide? Not director Atom Egoyan, whose new film "Adoration" explores just how confining cyberspace can be when a teenager confronts a culture clash that has damaged him and his family.

"Adoration" premiered on Thursday at the Cannes film festival, and following a press screening, Egoyan challenged the notion that the World Wide Web has fostered a global community.

"That's the cliche of the Internet, but the reality is that it exists in small interest groups," Egoyan told reporters.

In "Adoration," the key character is a Toronto teenager named Simon who confesses to a small Web chat room containing only his friends that his Middle-Eastern father planted a bomb in the suitcase of his Canadian mother, who was pregnant with Simon at the time, as she boarded a plane to Israel.

The bomb was discovered, and no one was hurt. But Simon's confession touches off a firestorm of controversy on the Web and fuels a wide range of reactions -- from sympathy to empathy and from love to hate.

But Egoyan does not see the response as coming from a singular collection of people all connected by the Web, but rather as reactions by different groups of Web users who have happened onto a small piece of information on the Internet.

"These are ultimately really closed communities that are responding to each other. It's just drowned out by kind of a global noise," Egoyan said.

Moreover, the Web is just one part of a multi-layered story in "Adoration" that ultimately tells of one teenager coming to a new understanding of himself, as well as his family's dealing with the pain and loss of Simon's mother and father who come from vastly different worlds.
